Tribute to Dan Faller, AOA’s Founder
Dear Dan:
We heard that you have now retired. Congratulations!
We have always appreciated your character from the first time we interacted in your 1975 “Adventure in Attitudes” course. In the subsequent decades, our appreciation never abated during the entire time of your leadership of AOA.
We want to inform you (and Jeff as your AOA successor) that we did not renew our AOA membership which expired on May 31, 2024. That is because we finally succumbed to the relentless assault and discrimination by the city and county of Los Angeles, LAHD and the state itself against landlords and their property/rental rights.
As just two examples:
- When I appeared in the council chambers in 2023, my council member buried herself in her paperwork when I testified, but otherwise paid close attention whenever a renter spoke!
- During the period of 2005-2009, hatred and legal tricks we personally experienced from LAHD and the 28 attempts that it took to meet with Eric Garcetti for his help to get the head of LAHD off my back so I could continue renting my duplex was very disappointing: not to mention stressful and expensive!
We have now sold our apartment building to a corporate entity – so much for the city’s economic and political climates that was once open-minded to Mom-and-Pop landlords. But … today’s climate has changed from pro-landlord in 1975 to anti-landlord.
We also want to mention how much we benefited from AOA’s monthly magazine with its ongoing pertinent articles – Dennis Block’s legal questions and answers and list of vendors. Also, we benefitted, even more so, from AOA’s telephone consulting service.
Lastly, we wish the best for your son, Jeff, as he continues leading in your shoes.
