In order to continue funding the Stay Housed L.A. program, the Los Angeles City Council approved $177 million to support the program for an initial 15-month period, with options for extensions. The City Council voted 12-1 to approve the funding, which provides tenants facing eviction with free legal representation, rental assistance, and outreach services.
Since the program’s launch in 2021, Stay Housed L.A. has opened approximately 26,000 tenant cases, which includes full legal representation and limited legal assistance funded largely by Measure ULA revenue that was approved in 2022.
With expanded and continued funding of tenant legal defense programs, more tenants may now have free attorneys in eviction cases, potentially leading to more contested cases and longer court processes for housing providers navigating the eviction process.
