Way back when Governor Wilson was in office, a bill called Costa-Hawkins Fair Housing Act was passed and it protected the property rights of homeowners. The politicians were no longer allowed to pass certain controls and fees against our homes under Costa-Hawkins. Prop. 33 would destroy Costa-Hawkins and all these rights! No wonder single-family property owners are so concerned.
If Prop. 33 is passed into law, our elected officials could put your home under even more government controls.
Strangers in Your House?
They could hire inspectors to make certain that your home is what they decide is “habitable” and that you are following their new laws governing your property. These inspectors cost money and political officials could force you to pay yearly fees in order to pay their newly hired “inspectors”.
If the paint is peeling a little on your home, you could be required to fix it immediately and face a fine if it is not done to the inspector’s schedule. Believe it, this is already happening to apartment owners and is just a small example of how these inspectors can also make all property owners’ lives miserable. In the first place, I don’t think you want these guys in your home and inspecting everything like they currently do to tenants in many other areas.
Buying Renters’ Votes
You rent a room out in your home or you want to take a long vacation, so you rent out your home for six months. Even now, just try to get your tenant out of that room and especially get your home back when a relative wants to occupy it. It can take you six to 18 months to regain your own home and you would not even get the back rent!
Why would our elected officials pass laws like this? Large corporations now own thousands of homes for rental income and their and your tenants want lower rents. The tenants are well organized and represent a large portion of all the voters. The politicians are already buying the votes of these renters in order to get reelected, as that is their primary goal once they get into office. So … the politicians want to please renters even more to get their vote the next time they run for reelection and … they want to use your property to do it!
The tenant groups are claiming that they have a “right to housing” – yours and everybody else’s. They got free housing during Covid as the immoral and unethical politicians made it possible for many renters to live rent free for over two years in apartments.
Why Should YOU Pay and Give Up Your Rights?!
Prop. 33 would allow them to pass laws that:
- Destroy your property rights
- Allows them to assess more fees on our homes
- You could have yearly inspections in your home plus
- Any future rental income from your property could be limited by vote-getting, tenant-pleasing politicians!

The above are just a few examples of what the future could hold for us unless we join together and defeat Prop. 33. We need to get the good people to vote and defeat those who want to steal your property rights!
In addition, you’ll also want to vote NO on Prop. 5 as it would make it much easier for the state to increase our taxes and YES on 34 to help stop future proposals like Prop. 33. Most of the other propositions would also require more taxes.

Please give a copy to every homeowner, relative and friend you can reach and encourage them to do the same. Only in this way will we be able to alert all homeowners in California of what could happen to our property rights unless we all vote NO on Prop. 33!
