Too Long Two’s Day (Tuesday)

On Tuesday, 2/22/2022, between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., please make two phone calls. One to your city council member and another to your county supervisor. Although the state eviction moratorium has expired, there are multiple counties and cities that continue to extend the moratorium on evictions. Let’s get their phones ringing!

Give Thanks!

If you are not currently under any eviction ban, rent freeze, or local rent control, call and thank your city council member and county supervisor for encouraging a healthy housing environment. As they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Supervisor David Haubert, from the Alameda County Board of Supervisors (1st District) and Supervisor Kathyrn Barger, from the LA County Board of Supervisors (5th District), have both advocated for the rights of housing providers.

Let Them Have It!

If your property is still under an eviction ban, rent freeze, or has other local restrictions, please make the two phone calls. If you miss the one-hour window and call either before or after, it will still make a great impression! We are doing everything we can to influence our local politicians. Again, this is a grassroots effort that requires the participation of everyone to really make an impact.

Since our local politicians’ actions show that they do not care about the pain and suffering that they are causing housing providers, let’s reframe our talking points to appeal to what they do care about (tenants!). Please think of all the ways that tenants benefit from a healthy rent control free environment. Here’s a list of ways that their current protections are actually hurting the tenants:

  • The answer for people impacted by Covid is rent relief – NOT EVICTION BANS. They must pay the rent to avoid future eviction. You, politicians, will then be responsible for more homelessness
  • Eviction bans encourage non-payment of rent and more debt for residents
  • Bans are unfair to those residents who have worked hard to pay their rent. They continue to pay the rent while watching their non-paying neighbors come home from a vacation with a new BMW! Unfair!

One size does not fit all, so please customize your message according to the need in your local area. If you prepare a simple two or three-point outline, it will help ensure that you’ll share those things with the person who answers your phone call. 719 days of emergency orders is too long! Mark your calendars now and let’s inundate them with our calls!
